Normally, the star of the popular A&E hit show Duck Dynasty is busy running the Louisiana-based Duck Commander operation with his family, but this past weekend Willie Robertson stepped onto a new “course.” Papa John’s Pizza founder John Schnatter invited Duck Dynasty’s top personality to take a test run with him on the drag strip at the zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, NC.
Papa John’s was out in Charlotte in force during Memorial Day Weekend – joining forces with the USO to host a special celebration, in concert with the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race, to salute our U.S. troops with a “Welcome Home” pizza party—for 10,000 people. As part of the festivities, Papa John emerged victorious in his tongue-in-cheek standoff against long-time friend and Charlotte Motor Speedway President, Marcus Smith, in their much talked about drag strip match-up for the coveted “Golden Hubcap” title.
After the event, Papa John also invited Willie Robertson to join him in his beloved Z28 classic Camaro – for a quick full throttle sample run. While he reportedly enjoyed the test drive, Robertson joked about the white knuckle ride as he exited the car and chided Papa John that he “needed to buy new pants.” Watch the WLKY-TV segment about the event and Willie’s ride in the Z28.
Papa John’s John Schnatter: “Thanks Willie – for helping to bring attention to a great cause and a great campaign. During Memorial Day week, we raised $25,000, along with our customers across the country, to support the USO as part of our special USO Meal Deal campaign. Helping our troops overseas and here in the U.S. is always ‘job one’ for us – and it’s an effort we’re proud to put our name behind.”
